The renewal of interest in emulsion-bound mixes is leading laboratories to devise suitable mix design methods. Using a semi-course asphaltic concrete mix design which was varied around a reference formula, the rotary shearing press compaction test was performed under operating conditions which differ from those laid down in the French Standard NF P 98-252. These new conditions have revealed that there are three separate regions in the graph showing compaction versus the number of turns. The first of these three regions is associated with constant mass compaction, in which the volume of voids is reduced with no loss of water, the second with compaction in which water is expelled and the third with constant mass compaction during which the granular skeleton is rearranged.
