摘要

Anomalous voltammetric responses, i.e. quasi-reversible redox transitions within the double layer region, have been reported earlier by at least two groups working on the development of gold microsensor electrodes. The responses in question, which appeared in the absence of dissolved analytes, were attributed to the presence of impurities. It is demonstrated here that such behaviour reflects the presence at the interface of non-equilibrium, superactive, metastable states of gold. Such states are quite common; they are often produced in electrode fabrication or pretreatment processes and are closely related to surface active site and electrocatalytic behaviour. Non-equilibrium surface state responses are not confined to gold; the states in question are surprisingly persistent but may be removed by careful annealing or selective dissolution pretreatments.
