Off-gas systems are a complex and integral part of any process involving either the smelting of ores or the recycling of scrap metal and in general involve the cooling and cleaning of the off-gas stream before it is discharged to the environment. The consequences of a poorly designed or functioning off-gas system are severe, with some examples being reduced productivity, out of compliance for emissions, poor workplace conditions, high maintenance costs, or in the worst case, catastrophic failure. CFD provides an ability to simulate the performance of various off-gas system components, and thereby provide an opportunity to evaluate and optimize during the design phase, or, troubleshoot and de-bottleneck in an operating plant. In this paper, the capability of CFD for the evaluation and design of off-gas systems is demonstrated by example: a water cooled off-take, an evaporative spray cooler, and a waste heat boiler are considered here. These examples show how CFD can compliment traditional design approaches and minimize engineering approximations, thus adding value to engineering design efforts.
