摘要

In the U.S., a car will crash in the next five seconds, and five seconds after that, and another five seconds later- a ripple effect with huge societal and financial impact. An injury occurs every 15 seconds and a death occurs every 13 minutes. Motor vehicle crashes are the leading killers of Americans under the age of 34 as well as the leading cause of major brain and spinal injuries. For 2000, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimated the economic cost of crashes as well over 1/2 billion dollars a day, totaling $230 billion annually. In 2001, over 42,000 people were killed and 3 million injured from motor vehicle injuries in the United States.
