Photocycloaddition of 3-methyl-2-cyclohexen-l-one to C_(70) results in a reaction mixture which is far more complex than from the corresponding reaction with C_(60). Although separation of the regioisomeric and diastereoisomeric monoadducts has proven difficult, IR and ~3He NMR studies have shown that several sets of diastereomers are formed upon irradiation of the enone and C_(70). Analysis by ~3He NMR suggests that photoaddition occurs preferentially at the two 6,6 bonds closest to the pole of the C_(70) molecule, as the mixture of monoadducts shows a series of peaks at -27.2 ppm and -24.2 ppm. These values are nearly identical to those obtained for the fully characterized fulleropyrrolidino C_(70) monoadducts in which addition has taken place at the C(1)-C(2) and C(5)-C(6) bonds of C_(70).
