There has been substantial interest in dyads in which C_(60) is covalently linked to electron donor molecules that absorb strongly in the visible region. With this in mind, the goal of this study is to synthesize molecules with hydrophilic linking groups, which hopefully will enhance the solubility of the dyads in polar media. These novel compounds have been fully characterized. Photophysical properties, such as quantum yields for formation of singlet oxygen and fluorescence quenching, have been studied.
