摘要

The adsorption of water is a characteristic of some sedimentary rocks. Although the consequences of this phenomena are known since a long time it has not been complete studied until now. Depending on the kind of rock the swelling process will follow different swelling mechanism. The respectives conceptual models considering microstructural aspects are presented. For quantifying the swelling potential new swelling testing procedures are proposed. Based on the conceptual models and on laboratory test results, structure design aspects were derived.
