An adaptive power controller has been developed for cylindrical traverse grinding, where the power consumed during the grinding process is controlled by adjusting the traverse feed rate in real time. A strategy of self-adaptive the discourse universe is introduced to the fuzzy control model, which can self-adapt the discourse universe during the controlling and guarantee a stable power response. To verify the validity of the power control strategy, series experiments were conducted. The results show that the adaptively controlled system provides a better response than the non-adaptive control system over a wider range of cutting conditions.
