Researchers have identified serious deficiencies in the human activity data currently available forrnuse in estimating human exposure to various pollutants. A number of new technologies arernunder development which show promise for improving both the quality and quantity of collectedrnactivity data. These technologies include GPS systems for determining geographic location,rndigital camera and video systems for recording the features of each visited microenvironment,rnradio systems for reporting activities in hazardous settings (e.g., construction sites), and menudrivenrncomputerized diary systems for automating data collection and coding. This paperrnpresents the results of a recent survey of these and other emerging technologies. The surveyrnresults are presented in the form of an annotated appendix describing promising technologies, therndevelopers of each technology, recent applications of the technology (if any), and perceivedrnadvantages and disadvantages of the technology when used to collect time/activity data. Thisrnpaper also presents the results of a preliminary field evaluation of a passive photographic diaryrnsystem designed to remedy a number of activity data collection deficiencies.
