A Survey of Prospective Technologies for Collecting Human Activity Data

Researchers have identified serious deficiencies in the human activity data currently available for use in estimating human exposure to various pollutants. A number of new technologies are under development which show promise for improving both the quality and quantity of collected activity data. These technologies include GPS systems for determining geographic location, digital camera and video systems for recording the features of each visited microenvironment, radio systems for reporting activities in hazardous settings (e.g., construction sites), and menudriven computerized diary systems for automating data collection and coding. This paper presents the results of a recent survey of these and other emerging technologies. The survey results are presented in the form of an annotated appendix describing promising technologies, the developers of each technology, recent applications of the technology (if any), and perceived advantages and disadvantages of the technology when used to collect time/activity data. This paper also presents the results of a preliminary field evaluation of a passive photographic diary system designed to remedy a number of activity data collection deficiencies.
