The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency recently conducted the Baltimore Particulate Matterrn(PM) Epidemiology and Exposure Study. This month-long summer study involved dailyrnmeasurement of selected personal, residential indoor, residential outdoor, and ambient airrnpollutants pertaining to an elderly (65+) subject population. The study was centered in andrnaround an 18-story apartment complex located in Towson, Maryland. This location representedrnan urban environment with minimal impact from major local pollution point sources. An ambientrnmonitoring site was located in a park approximately 11 km distant. Goals of this study were torndetermine mass concentrations of selected pollutants and to characterize the relationships amongrnthe variables. Pollutant monitoring was conducted for PM_(2.5) mass, NO_2, O_3, and CO. PM_(2.5) massrnand NO_2 measures included personal exposure monitoring (13-15 subjects/day, 5 subjects/day,rnrespectively). Time series across the 28 days of the study were obtained for each pollutant andrnstatistical relationships were established. The maximum 1-h concentrations of CO observed werern1.5 (indoors), 1.7 (outdoors), and 2.0 ppm (ambient). The highest 1-h concentration of ozonernobserved was at the ambient site (109 ppb). Very low indoor ozone concentrations werernmeasured (1-h mean <16 ppb). Personal and indoor 24-h NO_2 exposures did not exceed 8 ppbrnwhile outdoor concentrations as high as 20 ppb were recorded. Pearson correlations of personalrnPM_(2.5) mass versus personal NO_2 (r = -0.11), indoor CO (r = 0.30), and outdoor O_3 concentrationsrn(r = 0.65) were established. Other statistical relationships are reported.
