Surrogate and matrix spiking is a routine part the quality control program in USEPArnMethodologies for the analysis of water and soil samples. Recovery information from surrogaternand matrix spiking of field samples yields valuable insight into the accuracy of the instrumentalrnanalysis and identify possible sample matrix interactions with the target compounds. Currently,rnthe EPA has two methods for analysis of volatile organic compounds in ambient air collected inrnspecially prepared canisters, Methods TO-14A and TO-15. Method TO-14A has little to no QCrnguidance where as Method TO-15 has more stringent criteria. However, neither method requiresrnsurrogate or matrix spiking as a part of its QC criteria. Important information about therninstrumental analysis, sample matrix interactions, and sample train integrity could be derivedrnfrom spiking ambient air samples.rnThis study was done to investigate the viability of surrogate and matrix spiking ofrnambient air samples collected in SilcoCansò and SUMMAò canisters, identify some of thernproblems, and develop a spiking procedure. For the study, the surrogate compounds includernToluene-d8 and 1,4-Dichlorobenzene-d4. The matrix spiking compounds are 1,1-Dichloroethene,rnTrichloroethene, Benzene, Toluene, and Chlorobenzene.
