Molecular breeding for the genetic improvement of forage plants

Significant progress has been made in the development and exploitation of an integrated suite of resources for functional genomics in key temperate forage plants and their endosymbionts. Recent advances in high-throughput methodologies for gene discovery based on expressed sequence tags and genomic deep-sequencing, oligonucleotide microarray-based global gene expression analysis and metabolic profiling are outlined in the context of systems biology and translational genomics applications underpinning forage molecular breeding. Selected examples of current approaches on the molecular genetic dissection of biosynthetic pathways and developmental processes as well as biotic and abiotic stress resistance are presented as transgenesis applications in forage molecular breeding. Strategies for the application of molecular methodologies-including transgenesis and functionally associated genetic markers-in developing designer perennial ryegrass, white clover and grass-endophyte associations are presented.
