A high performance 3- stack, 3- color quantum well infrared photodetector (QWIP) for the mid-, long- and very long- wavelength (MW, LW, and VLW) infrared (IR) detection has been developed in this work. The detection bandwidths with full width at half maximum (FWHM) are 5.9 ~ 7.0μm (MWIR), 9.1 ~ 11.2μm (LWIR) and 12.2 ~ 16.9μm (VLWIR), which cover the major portion or entire range of the three atmospheric blocking bands: the water band (5.5-7.5μm), the ozone (O_3) band (9.4-9.9 μm), and the CO_2 band (14-16μm). Values of the dark current detectivity were found to be D* = 8.5xl0~(12)cm-Hz~(1/2)/W at T= 40K,V_b= -1.3V, and λ_p= 6.5 μm for the MWIR stack; D*= l.5xl0~(10) cm-Hz~(1/2)/W at T= 40K, V_b= -1.4V, and λ_p= 10.1 μm for the LWIR stack, and D*=1.2xl0~(11) cm-Hz~(1/2)/W at T= 30K, V_b= -1.1V, and λ_p= 15.1 μm for the VLWIR stack.
