Diverting materials from landfill sites has implications for the creation of new markets and has environmental benefits through offsetting the need for the extraction of raw materials. This paper investigates market barriers and identifies potential markets for the reuse and recycling of construction waste. Research carried out by Nottingham Trent University and APT Environmental has established the type and volume of waste arising in the Greater Nottingham area by conducting annual surveys at landfill sites and transfer stations. This data on construction waste allows analysis, dissemination and action plans to be developed and implemented. This is achieved through focus groups composed of architects, consultants, developers, suppliers, recyclers, government bodies and contractors. The research data and the focus groups highlight current issues and attitudes to perceived and real barriers to the reuse and recycling of construction waste. From this research, together with comparisons with current best practice, a review of social barriers to the recycling and reuse of construction waste is presented with recommendations for future action and likely trends in the construction sector.
