This paper reports surface chemical and structural data obtained from Chromate Conversion Coatings (CCC) formed on different thin film Intermetallic Compounds (IMCs) coupled to thin films of AA2024-T3 matrix compositions. The Structural data indicates that the CCC contains predominantly the Cr mixed oxide compound and the CCC structure changes to a higher long range ordering with a 20 hr aging period. The surface chemical results shows that the CCC is heterogeneously distributed across the AA2024-T3 surface. The results indicate that the CCC formed on the Al_2Cu and Al_2CuMg thin film analogs are thinner than for CCC formed on AA2024-T3 and the Al_(20)Cu_2(MnFe), thin film analog. Furthermore, the retention of ferricyanide on the surface and the lack of aluminum in the thin film analogs might be the main factors limiting CCC formation.
