For the design of heat exchangers for carbon dioxide at near- or supercritical pressure, a large amount of Nusselt-relations is given in literature. Since these relations are fitted with experimental data, they can only be used for a limited range of conditions (pressure, temperature, flow rate, etc.). To be able to choose the right Nusselt relation for a certain set of conditions, an overview is desirable that covers all practical process conditions with a limited number of Nusselt relations. In this work CFD-simulations are used to investigate the range in which the widely-used Nusselt relation by Krasnoshchekov and Protopopov can be used. It was found that it can be used not only for the case it was constructed for (heating a downward flow) but also for cooling an upward flow.
