Redox evolution modeling of the porewater in the San Pedro Formation, Duero Basin (Spain)

Geochemical modeling was used to simulate the long-term redox evolution in the San Pedro Clay Formation. The simulation considers equilibrium for reactive minerals such as calcite, dolomite, gypsum, ferrihydrite and pyrite. Microbially-mediated degradation of organic matter and oxidative dissolution of pyrite are also considered from a kinetic point of view. Only aerobic respiration and sulfate reduction are considered as degradation processes. The modeling results indicate four redox periods, each one controlled by different redox couples: O(-II)/O(0), Fe(II)/ferrihydrite, gypsum/pyrite and SO_4/HS~-. Further research must be done in order to establish the role of illite and smectite as iron sources to precipitate pyrite during sulfate reduction.
