This paper has described possibly a unique approach within the tyre industry, of using knowledge gained of the road texture to consider how the tyre performance may be enhanced. It is expected that the application of such knowledge will increase further with the wider understanding of the "vertical engineering" approach to road transport and the application of electronics to tyre technology. Finally it is stressed that only by the co-operation of the various technologies within the road, tyre, and vehicle industry, will significant progress be made to enhance safety and reduce the environmental intrusion of our road transport system in developed areas and so promote road transport in developing countries as a viable system.
