An anaerobic-anoxic-aerobic sequencing batch reactor (SBR) has been adopted for biological phosphorus removal from synthetic wastewater. Two parameters were investigated on phosphorus release and uptake: the amount of added acetate and nitrate. The experimental results showed that the rates of phosphorus release and uptake have no significant differences responsible for variety of acetate concentration on condition that the influent acetate was higher than 230mg-COD/l. On the other hand, when nitrate concentration was lower than 30mg-N/l, the higher the concentration of nitrate in anoxic, the higher the rate of anoxic phosphorus uptake. The removal efficiency of phosphorus was 90%, and the 24mg-P and 120mg-N were removed at the expense of only 550mg-COD in SBR system.
