Estimation of Chlorophyll-a Concentration with Satellite Remote Sensing

This study investigates the statistical model for estimating chlorophyll-a concentration from satellite data. Satellite detected radiance over ocean carries information on atmosphere as well as water quality, therefore, the model should include both of water quality parameters and atmospheric parameters. In this study we assume very simple multiple linear regression model to estimate chlorophyll-a concentration which describes remotely sensed radiance with chlorophyll-a concentration as a water quality parameter and atmospheric SPM as an atmospheric parameter; Ri = aiLog(chl-a) + bi SPM + ci --------(1) where Ri denotes remotely sensed radiance in band i, chl-a and SPM denotes chlorophyll-a concentration and SPM respectively. From eq.(1), the model to estimate chlorophyll-a concentration and to estimate SPM can be got as ; Log(chl-a) = a' * Ri + b' * Rj + c' --------(2) SPM = a" * Ri + b" * Rj + c" --------(3) Where Rj denotes remotely sensed radiance in band j. By applying this model to the different sensors and different areas, stability of the model is investigated. Satellite sensors include LANDSAT TM and ETM, and TERRA/MODIS. Ground observation experiments have been carried out at Tokyo Bay area and Mikawa Bay area in different seasons. The proposed multi regression model with chlorophyll-a and SPM gives shows good correlation with remotely sensed radiance, and indicates the possibility of chlorophyll-a estimation from satellite data.
