摘要

Germany is a densely populated country, and most areas have been developed for economic andsocial utilization. Intact natural environments have become extremely rare. To preserve the remainingvaluable resources, engineering activities associated with the management of rivers and coastal waters haveto be ecologically oriented in order to minimize, or even prevent, negative impacts upon this environments. For this purpose, a variety of guidelines have been developed at the Federal Institute of Hydrology and have been successfully implemented and applied. This paper gives an overview about several ecologically oriented engineering approaches covering alternative groin types, compensation and mitigation measures, fish pass constructions, bedload management, and dredged material disposal, which have been successfully used in German rivers and estuaries. In addition, the new European Water Framework Directive is introduced.
