For more than 200 years flood protection policy in Switzerland was based on structural measures. The aim was to provide best security for people and goods against flooding. Consequence of this policy was an important lost of natural river courses and hence a considerable lost of ecologically important wetlands and river habitats, fauna and flora linked with waters. A new and integrated policy for flood protection was then developed and implemented 1991. Important keywords in this policy are: retention instead of discharging of flood water; to give more space to the rivers; preference on land use planning before structural measures to prevent from flooding; good maintenance of water courses to maintain initial flow capacity; flexible approaches to fix the protection objectives and hence the reference flood, in order to account for uncertainties, also in the context of climate change. In order to implement this new policy it was necessary to establish improved basic knowledge with coordinated research projects. Also, a GIS- based water information system was established which allows an overview on all kind of data from different water management sectors on a distinct stretch of a river.
