This paper presents a metric "test effectiveness" that can be utilized to compare electronics test equipment. This metric enables the user to measure the impact of each piece of test equipment on their process and to compare test equipment during the equipment evaluation process. It is especially useful when trying to choose between two or more types of test equipment such as in-circuit test, automated x-ray inspection, and automated visual inspection. Data from 2 test effectiveness studies are presented. The first analyzes the addition of automated x-ray inspection into an existing test process of in-circuit test and functional test. The second compares the relative effectiveness of automated optical inspection and automated x-ray inspection.
