Reducing Costs and Increasing Efficiency for pH Neutralization Systems

Controls systems for pH neutralization of wastewater are often designed to maintain a set point by continuously adding chemicals at a flow-paced rate that is also trimmed to increase accuracy. This approach is effective, but may require more chemicals and energy than necessary when the goal is simply to keep the pH within a range to meet regulatory requirements. This paper analyzes the pH control system at an industrial wastewater pre-treatment plant that prevents the discharge of noncompliant water while minimizing chemical and energy consumption. Neutralization of the plant's wastewater is achieved by running various chemical addition pumps of different sizes as needed to adjust the pH to within regulatory limits.The pre-treatment system also includes many other features to further protect against discharging noncompliant water, increase process efficiency, and reduce maintenance costs. Some of these features include redundant instrumentation, level controlled flow equalization pumps, and functionality within the operator interface to simplify pH probe calibration.
