Industrial alarm management has emerged as an important plant controls operator support tool. Properly applied, alarm improvement efforts will deliver important benefits of better plant operations, safer production, reduced plant maintenance costs, and lower enterprise insurance rates. The technology is based upon important fundamentals. The process has been documented and incorporated within many standards and regulations throughout the world. One of the key evaluations of individual plant alarm performance has been the measurement of those values against established metrics. Some of those metrics include values for alarm priority distributions for configured alarms. Alarm priority is used as a single measure of the alarm's importance to the enterprise—all other things being equal, the highest priority alarms are actioned by the plant operator before any lower priority ones. This paper advances the surprising and useful fact that the only valid use of alarm priority distribution measurements is for alarm design. No alarm activation priority distribution measurements will reveal anything of value.
