The success of Multivariable Predictive Control (MPC) has resulted in mature software tools at reasonable prices. This has made the technology valuable for small and mid-scale chemical applications. With a growing number of applications, often geographically spread out and at production facilities with limited or no local process control support staff, performance sustainment is becoming an increasingly challenging task. Although it has been recognized that performance sustainment requires the proper definition of monitoring Key Performance Indicators (KPI's), these KPI's are still very much a topic of discussion within the control community. In addition, providing the proper support structure to maintain these KPI's, which not only deals with technical support, but also with continuous training, is a key element in sustaining and enhancing MPC performance. This paper will discuss different aspects of MPC performance monitoring and technical support when sustaining MPC applications.
