Cybercars is a European project in the IST program of the 5th framework. The objective is tornsupport the development of fully automatic guided vehicles for transport of people and goodsrnin urban areas. Safety is one of the major research topics. TNO has developed a quantitativernmethod to assess the safety of Cybercars and other intelligent vehicle systems. To evaluaternthe method an assessment of an actual Cybercar system was carried out. The system assessedrnwas used to transport people at the Floriade exhibition in The Netherlands, between April andrnOctober 2002. The results of the analysis show that the method is a promising new tool, thatrnhas the potential to become a universal method for the safety evaluation of intelligent vehiclernsystems.
