Inter-vehicle communications (IVC) are expected to play a key role in realizing the intelligentrntransportation system (ITS) services that are being designed to prevent serious trafficrnaccidents. For the IVC equipment to be useful, however, it must be installed in most ofrnvehicles. Therefore, we face the problem of those ITS services that rely on IVC not being ablernto function until IVC equipment can be found in most of the vehicles on the road. We believernthat a compound device that provides the driver with some other useful functionality would bernan effective means of promoting the spread of IVC. We are, therefore, proposing a devicernwith both IVC and radar functions as a candidate compound device in this paper.
