The fascinating dendrimers with their well-defined tailorable structures, attractive properties, and promising broad applications have stirred up widespread excitement in sciences and technologies. Large amount of impressive works have been done on the various aspects of dendrimers. There are still more treasures to be explored. We plan to investigate the potential applications of dendrimers in the smart clothing for comfort, hazards warning and protection. Many developers of dendrimers have effectively applied the inspiration of a tree in branched geometry, growth, and even some function including the photosynthesis. Dendrimers have achieved remarkable success in biomimetics for synthetic polymer and are most versatile nanoscale building blocks. Dendrimers can thus offer great potential in more biomimetics and in developing the smart systems. To concentrate our efforts on more effective development, we limit our investigation to the potential applications of dendrimers in the smart clothing. We take a system approach in our work. Some holistic considerations with a top-down approach are used to establish the relevant hierarchical steps to be taken. Daring but reasonable models in modeling are being established, feasible and careful simulations are being performed to define and to isolate the critical variables. Some current available dendrimers are being explored for the suitability in our work. Our preliminary results indicate that some dendrimers are promising in helping us to develop the needed smart clothing. Coating the fabrics with hazardous gas sensitive dendrimers may provide the early version of smart clothing for hazards warning in dangerous closed environment such as in mining. Attaching the proper neutralizing agents to the dendrimers may further provide the protective function. More works are being planned to explore the applicability of the light harvesting function in some dendrimers and the potential in formulating the dendrimers into the fibrous form.
