A major thrust in modern military communication planning is tonintegrate all existing and future propagation media resources into ancommunication system with the objective of providing more robust,nreliable, survivable, and enduring communications performance in anstressed environment. The authors discuss the important architecturalnand network design options for integrating and effectively utilizingnheterogeneous media into survivable multimedia communication networks.nThey give specific recommendations as to maximal benefit choices andnquantify various aspects of resulting network performance. Specifically,nthey address network topology and connectivity, propagation medianselection, and usage, and techniques for maximizing performance whennproviding integrated services over heterogeneous (including radio-based)nlinks and external networks
