In open plan office rooms intended for office work, employees should be able to communicate verbally with other employees located at the neighboring work stations, but their conversations should not disturb other employees. This indicates that at a short distance from the speaker speech intelligibility should be high, whereas at a larger distance speech intelligibility should be as low as possible. Speech intelligibility is defined with the speech transmission index STI parameter. Therefore at a short distance from the speaker the STI value should be high (e.g. STI ≥ 0.6, for speech intelligibility – good), whereas at a larger distance it should be as low as possible (e.g. STI < 0.3, for speech intelligibility – bad). In the EN ISO 3382-3 standard other speech intelligibility evaluation parameters are indicated for an open plan office, based on the notion of “boundary” distances from the source, for which speech intelligibility is still satisfactory (distraction distance r_D – distance at which the speech transmission index STI=0.5) and the distance at which speech intelligibility prevents speech intelligibility (privacy distance r_P – at which STI=0.2). The article discusses the results of tests in one open plan office in which two functional zones should be present: 1 – verbal communication and 2 – which should not be reached by verbal communication from zone 1. The purpose of tests was to verify whether the use of acoustic screens will increase the acoustic separation between these zones.
