Polymer faced chain guides and tensioners are used in automotive drive chain assemblies to reduce chain vibration and noise. Durability testing on a pre-production diesel engine has shown that these components are susceptible to wear. Analysis of worn polymer guides indicate that the failure of the guide is governed by impact and fatigue failure. A study of the conditions at the interface using simple modelling and high speed video techniques, show that the contact between chain and guide is compound impact and sliding at a non-constant velocity. The chain, during normal engine operation is subjected to a number of dynamic excitation inputs. A purpose built test facility has been designed to mimic the conditions of the drive. The test facility enables control to be exercised over affecting parameters. Direct measurement of impact stress at the interface has been achieved using photoelastic techniques.
