It is well documented and now widely accepted that the principal components of rubber friction are adhesion and hysteresis. Both of these have distinctive viscoelastic properties, being both frequency and temperature dependent. It is common practice and convenient to visualize the frequency dependence of each coefficient of friction as occurring initially at a fixed temperature T, wherein the familiar viscoelastic peak corresponding to that temperature is evident. Similar curves at temperatures other than T are then superimposed on the original, having the visual effect of shifting the various peaks along the frequency axis. The envelope to these various curves can then be regarded as a viscoelastic plot where according as frequency is increased there is a corresponding increase in operating temperature.
