Validation of future Sentinel-3 SLSTR data in thernEastern Atlantic Ocean was analysed here through arncomparison of satellite-derived STT against in siturnmooring buoys observations.rnSST_(skin) retrieved from IR satellite radiometers onboardrnERS 1-2, Envisat, and Aqua, and concurrentrnSST_(bulk) measured with 14 buoy thermistors located atrn~1m depth were used to assess the statisticalrnrelationships between these datasets, with 20038 matchupsrnspanning from 1996 to 2015.rnAs expected, results showed consistency betweenrnSST_(skin) and SST_(bulk), exhibiting a correlation coefficientrnon the order of 98 %. Biases of both (A)ATSR andrnMODIS for day-time suggest a warmer satellite skinrnretrieval of + 0.15º and + 0.06º, respectively. For thernnight-time dataset, biases of - 0.25º and - 0.17º forrn(A)ATSR and MODIS, respectively, indicate coolerrnskin retrievals and reveal an inversion of the upperrnocean thermic gradient. The RMSE´s found were 0.53ºrnfor (A)ATSR and 0.41º for MODIS datasets.
