In the strength and stability analysis of dam-foundation system, it is quite necessary to apply the water pressure forces on both the dam and the foundation. Apparently, a seepage analysis of the whole system is required to obtain a more clear understanding of the water loads. In this paper, based on the fundamentals of seepage theory, some seepage analyses of the dam-site area are conducted by the finite element method. Some typical problems in the numerical modeling of seepage process are analyzed, such as methods for determination of the free surface and techniques for simulating the seepage control measures. Saturated-unsaturated method is suggested to determine the free surface of stable seepage and unstable seepage; "fissure to represent line of holes" method is utilized to simulate the drainage holes curtain; the equivalent permeability coefficient method is used to simulate the impervious curtains. These numerical simulation methods are achieved by the commercial FEM software ABAQUS. Then a 3-D seepage analysis of Ertan arch dam calibrated by engineering data and field records is performed. A refined FEM model is established based on analysis of the geological data and the complicated seepage control measures. Also, the monitoring data of pore pressure is summarized and analyzed. The permeability coefficients of the concrete dam and rock basement are identified by using of appropriate feedback method with in-situ measured seepage data. Finally, it can be shown from the simulation results that the simulated pore pressure agrees well with the monitoring data. It is indicated by the analysis of seepage control measures that the drainage system is comparatively more effective to reduce the pore water pressure than the impervious curtains.
