This paper discusses the causes of separation between the face slab and cushion layer of concretefaced rockfill dams. A novel method for monitoring the separation is presented, which is based on thedistributed optical fiber temperature monitoring system (DOFTMS). Finally the results of a laboratorystudy, which demonstrates the feasibility of DOFTMS, are presented and discussed.
