The Military Afloat Reach and Sustainability (MARS) Tanker) is being procured to replace the current Royal Fleet Auxiliary (RFA) vessels, which are non-compliant with the International Convention for the Prevention of Pollution from Ships (MARPOL) requirement for double hulling of these ship types.rnWorking with the MOD and designers and shipbuilders Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering Co Ltd (DSME), the opportunity was taken to create a platform that is “designed for the environment”. This approach meant that the design team allowed environmental considerations to influence the design process so that the final product will not only meet the current environmental legislative and regulatory requirements but is able to comply with currently-forecasted, more stringent, requirement during its design lifetime.rnThe application of the “design for environment” approach, compliance with current environmental requirements during the design process, together with the close collaboration between stakeholders, has presented challenges and there are arnnumber of lessons learned to be shared.
