The softening behaviour during annealing has been investigated in cold rolled AA1200rnalloys. It is found that the evolution of boundary spacing determined using galliumrnenhanced microscopy gives a very good representation of the softening behaviour.rnAnalysis of the microstructural evolution and thermoelectric and resistivity measurementsrnreveal that iron is precipitated in the course of grain growth. It is suggested that whenrnmaterial is annealed at low temperatures, solute drag of iron atoms holds up the grainrnboundaries. After precipitation of the iron, boundaries can move again.
