The surface tension of several aluminium alloys and the strength of the oxide film formedrnon them have been measured by the sessile drop technique and a modified-Wilhelmyrnplate method respectively. This paper describes the methods and equipment employedrnand the results obtained, with particular emphasis on the effect of alloy composition onrnthese two characteristics. The results are applied to the development of an hypothesis forrnthe formation of as-cast surfaces on vertical direct chill (VDC) cast product.
