A modified cellular automaton (MCA) model has been developed in order to predict thernevolution of dendritic and eutectic microstructures in solidification of alloys. The MCA modelrnaccounts for the aspects including the heterogeneous nucleation of a new phase, therngrowth of primary dendrites and two eutectic solid phases from a single liquid phase, asrnwell as the coupling between the phase transformation and solute redistribution. Thernpresent model was applied to predict the primary dendritic growth and eutectic structurernformation during practical casting solidification of Al alloys. The simulated results wererncompared with those obtained experimentally.
