Beams made of high strength concrete (HSC) cannot utilise t heir full potential strength due to ductility provisions in the current design standards. However, the full strength potential and ductility can be acieved, provided certain modification techniques are adopted. This paper presents one new way of improving the structural performance of reinforced HSC beams. Exploration into the effects on strength and ductility of high strength reinforced concrete beams, through an increase in tensile reinforcement, is reviewed. The use of helical reinforcement in the compression zone of beams in order to improve ductility is proposed, in which different geometric configurations are explored. Beams of 1.2 metres span were subjected to standard flexural lading, with an emphasis placed on the mid span deflection and the plastic curvature capacity of the beams.
