Viruses are present in wastewater and, consequently, in surface waters to which these waters, treated or untreated, are discharged. The efficiency of water and wastewater treatment processes for virus removal or inactivation is limited. These limitations are caused, in part, by the fact that the disinfection stage is a rate process implying that long contact times between the viruses and the disinfectant may be necessary in order to produce very low virus residuals in the finished water. Reports are available showing that ozone does have an excellent capacity for the inactivation of viruses in water.
