Research work on transferring a multitasking communication protocol implementation from one operating system to another is presented. The Transmission Control Protocol (TCP) and Internet Protocol (IP) of the Defense Data Network (DDN) were chosen for study. The case study of TCP/IP/CMOS to TCP/IP/iRMX conversion is considered; which Mitre's multitasking TCP/IP implementation is converted from the CMOS environment to the Intel iRMX operating system using top-down design, bottom-up layered, modular implementation and testing. A kernel based on the iRMX Nucleus System Calls was written to replace the CMOS multitasking functions. With this kernel and minimum modification of the TCP/IP code, a multitasking TCP/IP/iRMX code runs successfully on the Intel 310 iRMX system using a small computer.
