The Instrument Society of America (ISA) S. 84 standard specifies safety integrity levels (SIL) for safety instrumented systems (SIS). This paper examines one company's use of the ISA guidance and provides an approach on how to differentiate SIL's as spelled out in ISA S.84 based on a quantitative process hazards scenario description using a fault tree analysis template.
