Toxicities of influent and effluent wastewaters from a wastewater treatment plant, which receives mainly domestic wastewater with industrial wastewater to the Daphnia magna were compared to determine the most representative aqueous fraction for the toxicity identification evaluation (TIE) studies. The TIE results reveal that only one influent is more toxic, and the key toxicants of the toxic influent are aromatic acids, substituted benzenes and phenols, which suggest that we should pay attention to the receiving influent including these compounds avoiding the damage of organism in the primary activated sludge. In order to evaluate the applicability of the sludge in agriculture as a fertilizer, TIE studies are also performed on water extracts of the sludge.
