Greenways for Conservation of Local Cultural Diversity—A Case Study in Baoshan District of Shanghai

摘要

Based on the human ecosystem concept, this paper presents research conducted on the Baoshan Greenway, which was intended to determine if and how such greenway facilities were contributing to a platform for linking and displaying the rich local history and culture and how people might perceive such contributions based on the way they used the trail. An approach identified four major steps involved in creating Baoshan Greenway for conservation of local cultural diversity, these include: (1) city context research to develop a broad understanding of the region; (2) a more specific inventory, analysis, and assessment of the landscape cultural resources and their users, including the existing and the proposed; (3) an arrangement of the greenways' route considering the cultural assets of landscape and users; (4) a series of design guidelines for character precincts as a means of ensuring the local cultural themes and recreational opportunities are captured and enhanced. This process reveals that local historical and cultural features are important components for urban development and greenways contain the interpretable, conservational and integrative functions of local culture in time and space.
