Combustion exhaust particles and associated adsorbed organic compounds released into the atmosphere are of concern because of their possible health effects. Of particular concern are the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) which are known to be mutagenic and suspected to be carcinogenic. Measurements of the amount of PAH associated with different aerosol size fractions are critical for a complete understanding of the environmental fate of and human exposure to fine particles containing PAH.
