Interlaboratory Comparison of Ambient Air Samples

The California Air Resources Board (CARB) has developed a sampling system to collect ambient air samples that are used to evaluate the relative differences in non-methane hydrocarbon (NMHC) species among Photochemical Assessment Monitoring Station (PAMS) laboratories. The system is used to collect simultaneous ambient air samples from a site with historically high hydrocarbon concentrations. The sampling unit is capable of filling up to 10 canisters, with each canister sent to one of the designated PAMS laboratories for analysis. The responses are tabulated and made available to participating laboratories. The interlaboratory comparison check allows us to assess the variability of the measurement processes using real-world samples at ambient level concentrations. This system emulates a round-robin check using a single canister; however, unlike round-robin checks, it does not experience delays in routing a canister between laboratories, or gradual loss of canister pressure as the contents are analyzed. The system is used to complement the through-the-probe (TTP) and laboratory audits that use standards from the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The following paper presents the equipment, sampling methodology, and techniques used in the ambient air interlaboratory comparison check. The paper also presents recent data results and future Quality Assurance Section (QAS) applications of the interlaboratory comparison procedure.
