摘要

Endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) may pose serious health and ecological threats. An understanding of the sources and formation of these chemicals must be attained in order to control their release into the environment. Combustion devices are a source of potentially significant EDC releases. There is already a general acceptance of the theory of formation of the EDCs polychlorinated dibenzo-pdioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) in incinerators; however, these two groups of compounds make up only a portion of EDC emissions. Other EDCs, including polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and polychlorinated naphthalenes, are believed to follow similar formation mechanisms and trends. This work focuses on the formation of EDCs from precursors, such as phenol and chlorobenzenes, under various combustion conditions. We explore the effects of precursor and catalysts composition on homologue production and distribution to provide insight into the mechanisms of the EDC formation.
